How Does Hands-Free Baling Work?
Hands-Free Baling coordinates the tractor, baler and precision ag technology as one connected system. It combines:
- AutoTrac guidance
- AutoTrac Turn Automation
- Weave Automation
- Speed Automation
- Gate Automation
Using guidance lines created during previous combine passes, AutoTrac directs the tractor along the windrows. Weave Automation then moves the baler across the windrow to fill the chamber more evenly and create consistent, square-shouldered bales.
As each bale reaches the proper size, Speed and Gate Automation manage the tractor and baler through the next steps. The system can stop the tractor, wrap the bale, open the gate, eject the finished bale and continue working. At the headland, AutoTrac Turn Automation completes a repeatable turn and lines the tractor up for the next pass.
The operator still supervises the machine, but much of the repetitive steering and baler control is handled automatically.
More Consistency Between Operators
One of the biggest advantages of Hands-Free Baling is that it reduces how much the final result depends on the individual operator.
An experienced operator may already know how to weave across a windrow, adjust speed and time each step of the baling process. Someone with less experience may need more time to develop that same rhythm.

Baling information can also be documented through John Deere Operations Center, giving operators greater visibility into their fieldwork and equipment activity.
For farms already using John Deere guidance and automation, this creates another opportunity to put that technology to work.
Equipment Compatibility
John Deere Hands-Free Baling is available on select John Deere 1 Series Round Balers paired with compatible 6R, 7R or 8R tractors.
The tractor and baler must also be equipped with the required precision ag technology, including Weave Automation. Compatibility will depend on the exact tractor, baler and technology configuration, so existing equipment should be reviewed individually.
